    Summary

    This study found that thyroid function parameters are generally normal in patients with active acromegaly. Thyroidal economy remains unaffected by acromegaly itself.

    Background:

    • Acromegaly, a condition caused by excess growth hormone, may potentially affect thyroid function.
    • Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding thyroid abnormalities in acromegaly patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether acromegaly itself is associated with abnormalities in thyroidal economy.
    • To assess various thyroid function parameters in patients with active acromegaly.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured serum concentrations of thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), resin T3 uptake, total and free thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and reverse T3.
    • Assessed the thyrotropin response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
    • Analyzed data from 21 patients with active acromegaly.

    • Mean levels for total T4, T3, reverse T3, and TBG were within normal ranges.
    • Mean concentrations for free T4, T3, and reverse T3 were also not significantly different from normal.
    • The thyrotropin response to TRH was normal in all patients.

    • Thyroid function parameters, including hormone levels and TRH response, are generally normal in patients with active acromegaly.
    • These findings suggest that acromegaly per se does not significantly alter thyroidal economy.
    • Contradicts some earlier reports, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
