Pure flavonoids naringin (NG) and naringenin (NGN) were used to green synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These stable, bioactive AgNPs show promising antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cellular activities, highlighting eco-friendly nanomaterial production.
Area of Science:
- Nanotechnology
- Green Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Flavonoids are explored for green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles.
- Research on pure naringin (NG) and naringenin (NGN) for silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using naringin and naringenin as bioreductants.
- To evaluate the biological activities of the synthesized AgNPs.
Main Methods:
- Green synthesis of AgNPs using NG and NGN.
- Characterization via UV-Vis, DLS, STEM, EDX, and FTIR.
- Biological evaluation including antioxidant, antimicrobial, and Allium cepa assays.
Main Results:
- Spherical AgNPs (17 nm for AgNG, 20.4 nm for AgNGN) were successfully synthesized.
- Stable colloidal dispersions with negative zeta potentials and low polydispersity indices (PDIs) were observed.
- AgNPs demonstrated significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, and concentration-dependent cytogenetic effects.
Conclusions:
- Flavonoid-mediated synthesis offers an eco-friendly route to stable, bioactive AgNPs.
- Synthesized AgNPs show potential for diverse biological applications.
- The study confirms the efficacy of NG and NGN in producing functional nanomaterials.
