Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Overview of Flail Chest
Flail chest is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the fracture of three or more adjacent ribs in multiple places. It is most commonly caused by direct impacts and trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or injuries from a steering wheel impact. It can also occur due to falls in elderly individuals with osteoporosis, or assaults involving sharp objects.
Pathophysiology
The pathophysiology of flail chest is complex, involving fractures of...

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Traumatology

Background:

  • Traumatic hand injuries with tissue loss require effective reconstructive solutions.
  • The groin flap is a versatile option for soft tissue reconstruction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the groin flap in treating limited traumatic injuries of the hand and wrist with tissue loss.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen groin flaps were utilized for reconstruction of traumatic hand injuries.
  • Patient demographics included males aged 21 to 56 years.

Main Results:

  • Complete survival of all flaps was achieved.
  • Complications included partial flap necrosis (2 cases), marginal necrosis (4 cases), and one instance of flap loosening.

Conclusions:

  • The groin flap is a reliable and safe reconstructive method for hand injuries involving tissue loss, even with advancements in microsurgery.
  • It remains a viable option for both soft tissue and bone defects.
