Objective:
Early training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid is crucial due to the high incidence of sudden cardiac death. This study examines the knowledge of basic life support and first aid among Primary and Secondary Education students in Valladolid.
Methods:
A total of 240 students aged 10 to 14 participated through a questionnaire covering sociodemographic dimensions, general BLS knowledge, specific knowledge of adult CPR, and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Results:
The results indicate that Primary school students have limited knowledge of BLS, with only 8.6% able to correctly explain cardiac massage and 22.9% understanding the appropriate compression depth. In Secondary school, although knowledge is slightly better, it remains insufficient. Furthermore, prior training showed a significant influence on demonstrated knowledge.
Conclusions:
Primary and Secondary Education students exhibit low levels of BLS knowledge, highlighting the need to improve training in these skills.
