This study quantifies the radiological growth rate of dentigerous cysts, finding they enlarge faster in the anteroposterior direction. This research clarifies the biological behavior of these common odontogenic cysts.
Area of Science:
- Dentistry
- Oral Pathology
- Radiology
Background:
- Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic lesions linked to impacted teeth.
- They are the second most common odontogenic cyst after radicular cysts.
- Their slow growth has not been previously quantified.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantitatively determine the radiological growth rate of dentigerous cysts.
- To clarify the biological behavior of these cysts.
- To improve clinical management and guide future research.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 187 dentigerous cyst cases.
- Inclusion of 12 patients with mandibular impacted third molars and serial panoramic radiographs.
- Quantitative measurement of cyst dimensions (anteroposterior and inferosuperior) from DICOM images.
Main Results:
- Cyst dimensions showed an increase over time.
- Marked enlargement was observed in the anteroposterior (A-P) direction.
- A similar upward trend was noted in the inferosuperior (I-S) dimension.
Conclusions:
- Dentigerous cyst growth was greater in the anteroposterior than inferosuperior direction.
- No significant differences in growth rates were found based on sex or age.
- Quantitative data aids understanding of dentigerous cyst behavior.
