Abstract:
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide and represents a significant source of morbidity. Maintenance of sinus rhythm is associated with improvement in systolic heart failure, as well as lower risk of hospitalization, myocardial ischemia, and cardiovascular mortality. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy may be used in patients who decline or are inappropriate for catheter ablation or experience recurrent AF after catheter ablation. The landscape of antiarrhythmic therapies is convoluted with special considerations for toxicity and interactions requiring careful patient selection and monitoring and is the subject of this article.
