Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Summary

Open excision of wrist ganglion cysts has an 11.9% recurrence rate. Surgical experience and tourniquet use are key factors influencing recurrence, with higher experience and tourniquet use potentially reducing it.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand and Wrist Surgery
  • Musculoskeletal Tumors

Background:

  • Ganglion cysts are common benign hand and wrist masses requiring intervention for pain or cosmetic reasons.
  • Open excision is a standard treatment, but recurrence rates and influencing factors require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine recurrence rates after open excision of wrist ganglion cysts.
  • To identify patient-demographic and surgical factors associated with recurrence.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 109 patients undergoing open wrist ganglion cyst excision (2012-2024).
  • Exclusion of volar, multiple, or arthroscopically treated cysts; minimum one-year follow-up.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, cyst characteristics, and surgical variables including surgeon experience and tourniquet use.

Main Results:

  • Overall recurrence rate was 11.9% for dorsal wrist ganglion cysts.
  • Higher surgical experience and tourniquet use were significantly associated with lower recurrence rates (p<0.001 and p=0.019).
  • No significant correlation found between recurrence and age, follow-up duration, or cyst volume.

Conclusions:

  • Tourniquet use and increased surgical experience are associated with reduced recurrence rates following open ganglion cyst excision.
  • These factors may be crucial in optimizing surgical outcomes and minimizing reoperation for wrist ganglion cysts.
