Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pain widespreadness, measured by a body map, and nociplastic pain features in patients with CP.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional analysis of 110 adults with definite CP was conducted.
  • Pain widespreadness was assessed using the Michigan Body Map, categorizing pain as localized or widespread (≥3 regions).
  • Validated surveys measured clinical features of nociplastic pain, with multivariable regression analyses performed.

Main Results:

  • 64% of CP patients with abdominal pain reported widespread pain.
  • Widespread pain correlated with increased pain severity, pain interference, and neuropathic pain scores.
  • Widespread pain was also associated with greater fatigue, impaired physical functioning, chronic overlapping pain conditions, and poorer health outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of CP patients exhibit widespread pain, identifiable via a body map.
  • This subgroup presents with more severe symptoms and indicators of nociplastic pain.
  • A body map may serve as a practical tool for identifying patients who could benefit from targeted, mechanism-based pain management in CP.
