Shared roads, shared risks: Exploring micromobility, safety knowledge, and risk behaviors among campus road users

Objective:
This study examined the relationships between self-reported micromobility-related crash (MRC) prevalence, high-risk behaviors (HRB), and traffic safety knowledge (TSK) at a large metropolitan university.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study with convenience sampling collected information from students (n = 379) regarding their most frequent mode of transportation, frequency of HRBs, level of TSK, and MRC prevalence. As data was non-normal, nonparametric tests of associations were used including Wilcoxon Scores Rank Sums Test, Spearman's correlation, and Kruskal-Wallis Test.
Results:
HRBs were not associated with MRCs (W = 5774.500, p = .0988) whereas TSK were (W = 6021.500, p = .0333), with those who experienced an MRC displaying higher TSK scores. Overall, 7.2% (CI 95% [4.8%, 10.3%]) of participants experienced an MRC, with international students and students who live on campus having higher prevalence rates.
Conclusion:
Disparities in MRC prevalence and traffic safety knowledge emerged across demographic groups, underscoring the need for targeted educational campaigns and further research to address these differences.
