Summary

Veneered zirconia (VZ) crowns showed the least marginal misfit at the abutment-crown interface (ACI) compared to metal-ceramic (MC) and monolithic zirconia (MZ) crowns. Implant connection type did not significantly affect misfit, with all values below 50 µm.

Background:

  • The abutment-crown interface (ACI) is critical for the success of cement-retained restorations.
  • Evaluating marginal misfit is essential for ensuring long-term clinical performance and preventing complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the vertical misfit at the ACI for cement-retained crowns made from metal-ceramic (MC), monolithic zirconia (MZ), and veneered zirconia (VZ).
  • To assess the influence of implant connection type (external vs. internal) on marginal misfit.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty implants (external and internal connections) received prefabricated abutments and crowns fabricated from MC, MZ, or VZ materials.
  • Crowns were cemented, subjected to 6000 thermal cycles (5°C–55°C), and vertical marginal misfit was measured using scanning electron microscopy.
  • Statistical analysis included repeated-measures ANOVA and post-hoc tests.

Main Results:

  • Veneered zirconia (VZ) restorations exhibited the lowest mean marginal misfit (18.7 µm).
  • Monolithic zirconia (MZ) (42.2 µm) and metal-ceramic (MC) (39.9 µm) showed significantly higher misfit compared to VZ.
  • Implant connection type (external vs. internal) did not significantly impact marginal misfit (p=0.980).

Conclusions:

  • Cement-retained veneered zirconia restorations offer superior marginal fit at the ACI compared to MC and MZ.
  • Implant connection type does not appear to influence marginal misfit for these restorative materials.
  • All tested restorations exhibited misfit values below the clinically relevant threshold of 50 µm.
