Summary

The Clavien-Dindo classification reveals fewer chest drain complications than conventional methods, with most minor events not requiring intervention. Pigtail catheters are a safe alternative to intercostal catheters for chest trauma.

  • No deaths related to drain insertion. Pigtail catheters showed lower complication rates in stable patients (5.3% CD vs 21.2% ICC).

Conclusions:

  • Conventional classification overestimates chest drain complications compared to the CD classification.
  • The CD classification provides a more clinically meaningful assessment of patient harm.
  • Pigtail catheters are a safe and less invasive alternative to ICCs for chest trauma management.
