Intention and self-efficacy to quit e-cigarettes and cigarettes among California college students

Objective:
This study examined individual and school characteristics related to quit intention and quit self-efficacy (ie, perceived ability to successfully quit) for e-cigarettes and cigarettes.
Methods:
We analyzed cross-sectional online survey data from California community college and four-year university students (N = 5693) using mixed effects models.
Results:
Past 30-day e-cigarette and cigarette use rates were 19% and 6% (73% and 79% were dual users). Among students using these products, 69% endorsed e-cigarette quit intention (self-efficacy M = 7.1, SD = 2.3); 73% endorsed cigarette quit intention (self-efficacy M = 6.9, SD = 3.0). Across both products, students who were unhoused had higher quit intention odds (p < .01). Other individual characteristic associations differed across product type. Cigarette quit self-efficacy was greater among four-year university students (p = .02).
Conclusion:
Most students who used e-cigarettes and/or cigarettes reported quit intention and had relatively high quit self-efficacy. Significant associations between quit intention and quit self-efficacy with multiple individual characteristics and one school characteristic were observed.
