Aim:
This study was conducted to understand the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) undergraduate nursing students' engagement with social justice content in their courses. A secondary aim was to inform the development of trauma-informed inclusive teaching practices.
Background:
To foster socially conscious and adept citizens, universities make concerted efforts to integrate social justice and antiracist content into their curricula. However, little is known about the impact of social justice content within the classroom on BIPOC students whose lived experiences may mirror those topics being taught.
Method:
For this qualitative study, focus group interviews were conducted with 30 BIPOC nursing students.
Results:
Based on students' narratives, we found that the structure of content, class structure, pedagogical approach, experiences with peers, and faculty-related factors impacted BIPOC students' experiences.
Conclusion:
The findings indicate the need for a thoughtful, trauma-informed approach to incorporating social justice content into nursing curricula.
