Evaluation of Experimental Titanium Alloy Implants with Calcium Phosphate Coating and Antibacterial Components

Abstract:
Antibacterial properties of experimental titanium alloy implant samples (disks with a diameter of 10.0 ± 1 mm and thickness 1.0 mm) with a calcium-phosphate coating including an antibacterial component (vancomycin and cefazolin) against gram-positive pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis) were studied in vitro using the disk diffusion method. The tested antibiotic concentrations were 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 wt% in dry matter. Implants with vancomycin at all three concentrations exhibited a pronounced antibacterial effect against reference strains of S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and E. faecalis. Implants with cefazolin were effective only against S. aureus.
