Foundations of Curiosity and its Impact in Medical Education

Abstract:
Curiosity is a key cognitive drive that enhances learning, memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving but is often overlooked in medical education. This paper explores curiosity's psychological and neuroscientific basis, emphasizing its role in fostering motivation, clinical reasoning, empathy, and communication skills. It also highlights curiosity's protective effect against burnout and mental health challenges commonly experienced in the medical profession. The Medical Curiosity Scale (MCS) is introduced as a tool for measuring curiosity, helping educators cultivate it in training. In response to gaps in implementation, this paper discusses intentional strategies to foster curiosity through targeted educational design, including concrete applications of the MCS. In addition, the paper advocates integrating curiosity into curricula to improve academic and clinical outcomes, noting AI's potential to either enhance or hinder curiosity depending on its implementation.
