Isolated Extraperitoneal Congenital Lumbar Hernia in Children: A Series of Three Cases

Congenital lumbar hernia is a very rare hernia with < 100 cases reported in the literature so far. Extraperitoneal variant of this hernia is devoid of sac and usually contains retroperitoneal fat as its content. We present three such cases presenting as lumbar swellings (2 inferior and 1 superior triangle), clinically indistinguishable from lipomas. Based on clinical history and upon confirmation by computed tomography scan, excision of lipomatous swelling with primary repair was done by open technique. The size of the defect was around 2-3 centimeters, and the content in all of them was fat. The follow-up ranges from 3 to 24 months with no recurrence.
