In vitro activity of eravacycline against anaerobic bacteria isolated from clinically significant samples

Introduction:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of eravacycline against 173 anaerobic isolates and compare it with the activity of other antimicrobials used against infections caused by anaerobic microorganisms.
Methods:
Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for eravacycline, delafloxacin, piperacillin-tazobactam, meropenem, clindamycin, metronidazole and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid were determined against 173 anaerobic bacterial isolates obtained from several types of human clinical specimens.
Results:
MICs were lower for eravacycline than for all other antibiotics tested with the exception of delafloxacin against Bacteroides, Prevotella, Gram-positive anerobic cocci (GPACs) and Clostridium and piperacillin-tazobactam against Clostridium. Two (2.8%) isolates of Bacteroides spp. showed a MIC≥4μg/mL, along with two (22%) isolates of Phocaeicola spp. and two (11%) of GPACs.
Conclusions:
With some exceptions, the present results show lower MICs for eravacycline in comparison to the other antibiotics used against anaerobes.
