The development of functional stationary phase materials from renewable biomass resources reduces reliance on petrochemicals, and boosts the value-added potential of agriculture and forestry industries. In this study, a rosin-based quaternary ammonium salt modified silica (Sil-MPAN+) was synthesized through a two-step methodand applied to mixed-mode liquid chromatography. Analytical techniques confirmed the successful preparation of this innovative stationary phase. The unique combination of hydrophenanthrene rings, long alkyl chains, carbonyl and quaternary ammonium groups on the surface enables the stationary phase to perform effectively in mixed-mode chromatography. Specifically, the polar functional groups (carbonyl and quaternary ammonium) are embedded between the hydrophobic structures (hydrophenanthrene rings and long alkyl chains), endowing the stationary phase with a unique combination of hydrophobicity, π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding and ion-exchange functionality. The resulting Sil-MPAN + stationary phase integrates multiple interaction mechanisms, exhibiting unique triple-mode chromatographic separation capabilities. Experimental results confirmed its excellent separation efficiency for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), flavonoids, organic acids and nucleosides/bases. Furthermore, its application in the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine demonstrates the potential of this stationary phase to promote the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine components. In conclusion, this study presents a novel and effective strategy for the utilization of rosin in mixed-mode liquid chromatographic separation materials, broadening the potential applications of rosin-based quaternary ammonium salt in mixed-mode separation research.
