Hepatitis

61
Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver.

Cytomegalovirus Disease

59
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is caused by human cytomegalovirus, a double-stranded DNA virus of the Herpesviridae family. While primary CMV infection is often asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, the virus can cause severe disease in neonates and immunocompromised patients. CMV is the most common cause of congenital viral infection in the United States, and a major pathogen in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.CMV is transmitted via bodily fluids, sexual...

Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

2.4K
Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not...

Infectious Diseases and Their Occurrence01:28

Infectious Diseases and Their Occurrence

67
Infectious diseases appear in populations through various transmission patterns, influenced by pathogen characteristics, population immunity, environmental conditions, and social behavior. Understanding these patterns is essential for effective public health surveillance and intervention. These categories—sporadic, outbreak, epidemic, pandemic, and endemic—help frame the nature and scope of disease events.Sporadic diseases occur irregularly and infrequently, without a predictable...

Summary

Hepatitis C (HCV) detection in Poland increased in 2023, but remains below pre-pandemic levels. New policies expanded direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy access for drug users and incarcerated individuals, though impacts are not yet evident.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • New national policies in 2023 expanded access to direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for people who use drugs and incarcerated individuals.
  • These policy changes aimed to improve equitable access to Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current epidemiological situation of HCV infection in Poland.
  • To analyze trends in HCV cases and compare them with previous years, including pre-pandemic data.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of national surveillance data for HCV cases reported in Poland in 2023.
  • Comparison of 2023 data with 2022 figures and pre-pandemic trends (2015-2019).
  • Inclusion of mortality data obtained from Statistics Poland.

Main Results:

  • A total of 3,267 confirmed HCV cases were reported in Poland in 2023, a 29% increase from 2022.
  • The diagnosis rate rose to 8.65/100,000 population, yet remains below pre-2020 levels.
  • The proportion of people who inject drugs among diagnosed infections was stable at 3.2%; infections in penitentiary facilities declined to 1.3%.

Conclusions:

  • HCV detection in Poland has improved post-COVID-19 but has not reached pre-2020 levels.
  • Policy changes enabling DAA therapy for specific populations are crucial steps toward equitable treatment.
  • The full impact of expanded DAA therapy access on the epidemiological situation was not yet observed in 2023.
