Adapting the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric for Student Self-Assessment
Background:
The Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR) is a validated tool for assessing clinical judgment in nursing education. This study examines the use of an adapted version of the LCJR as a self-assessment tool to evaluate students' ability to reflect on clinical judgment development over an academic year.
Method:
The LCJR was adapted for self-assessment and administered to students twice during an academic year. During this time, activities designed to facilitate development of clinical judgment skills were strategically incorporated in the classroom.
Results:
Significant growth in clinical judgment skills was identified by participants. Interestingly, participants who had lower course grades also rated themselves lower on the adapted LCJR.
Conclusion:
The findings highlight the importance of self-assessment in empowering students to identify strengths and areas for growth, aiding their transition to real-world nursing.
