Menstrual issues, such as dysmenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding, are common during adolescence and may negatively impact quality of life. Transgender and non-binary adolescents may experience the same menstrual disorders as their cisgender peers, and they often report worsening gender dysphoria associated with menstruation. Various hormonal treatment options exist to alleviate menstrual issues, with certain specificities to consider in adolescents in general, and in transgender and non-binary adolescents in particular. Primary care physicians should explore menstrual health in their young patients to improve access to appropriate care for all adolescents.
