Maternal readiness for hospital discharge in China needs improvement. Enhancing discharge teaching quality and maternal health literacy are key factors for better postpartum care.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Maternal Health
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Postpartum hospital discharge readiness is crucial for maternal and infant well-being.
- Understanding factors influencing readiness in diverse populations is essential for targeted interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess mainland Chinese mothers' readiness for hospital discharge after childbirth.
- To identify factors associated with maternal readiness for hospital discharge.
Main Methods:
- A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 308 mothers in Shenzhen, China.
- Maternal readiness was assessed using the Chinese version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Study-New Mother Form.
- Data analysis included independent sample t-tests, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation, and multiple linear regression.
Main Results:
- The average readiness for hospital discharge score was 132.17 (±22.59), indicating a need for enhancement.
- Key influencing factors identified were the 'delivery' dimension of discharge teaching and 'lifestyle/behavior' and 'basic skills' dimensions of maternal health literacy.
- Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was found for these influencing factors.
Conclusions:
- Maternal readiness for hospital discharge among mothers in mainland China requires improvement.
- Enhancing the quality of hospital discharge teaching and improving maternal health literacy are recommended strategies.
- These interventions can positively impact postpartum care and maternal outcomes.
