Demonstration of real-time SDM transmission using 200 and 400 Gb/s pluggable optical transceivers over weakly
Abstract:
Space-division multiplexed (SDM) transmission technique based on weakly coupled multi-core fibers (MCFs) holds significant potential for next-generation large-capacity optical transmission systems, particularly in cost-sensitive fiber-constrained scenarios such as metro networks and data center interconnections (DCIs). In this paper, we demonstrate real-time SDM transmission using high-speed 200 and 400 Gb/s pluggable optical transceivers over weakly coupled seven-core MCF. The 200 and 400 Gb/s optical transceivers, which are packaged in CFP2 (C form-factor pluggable 2) and QSFP-DD (quad small form-factor pluggable double density) form factors, respectively, employ a coherent dual-polarization (DP) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) format and lightweight digital signal processing algorithms to achieve over 80 km transmission capability and the target single-channel data rate while satisfying form-factor constraints. The weakly coupled seven-core fiber exhibits extremely low inter-core crosstalk, which does not cause significant performance degradation in SDM system. Due to the coherent 200 and 400 Gb/s optical transceivers as well as the weakly coupled seven-core fiber, real-time 1.4 and 2.8 Tb/s 89 km SDM transmissions with over 7.5 and 8.5 dB power budget margins are respectively achieved. Field trial using the same pluggable optical transceivers over 70.84 km field-deployed seven-core fiber cable is also investigated and demonstrated. This work demonstrates the feasibility of achieving high-speed, cost-effective transmission using MCF and pluggable optical transceivers, and it is beneficial for next-generation high-speed metro and DCI applications.
