Summary

Generation Z using personal listening devices (PLDs) for 10+ hours weekly showed slightly higher extended high-frequency hearing thresholds. While most differences weren't significant, this highlights potential risks of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in young individuals.

Background:

  • Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a growing concern in pediatric and young adult populations (Generation Z).
  • Recreational and electronic noise sources contribute significantly to NIHL risk.
  • Extended high-frequency audiometry (EHFA) is crucial for early NIHL detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess potential hearing loss in Generation Z linked to technological device usage.
  • To utilize EHFA for evaluating hearing thresholds in relation to personal listening device (PLD) use.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional, descriptive study of individuals aged 10-22 years.
  • Conventional audiometry and EHFA were performed on all participants.
  • Participants were grouped by weekly PLD use: <10 hours vs. ≥10 hours.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in reported symptoms (vertigo, tinnitus, subjective hearing loss) between groups.
  • A statistically significant difference in hearing thresholds was observed at 10 kHz in the right ear for the ≥10 hours/week PLD group (p=0.02).

Conclusions:

  • Extended high-frequency hearing thresholds tended to be higher in Generation Z individuals using PLDs ≥10 hours/week.
  • The significant finding at 10 kHz in the right ear may indicate interindividual variability.
  • Further research with larger cohorts is recommended to confirm these findings on NIHL in Generation Z.
