Background:

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue with severe health implications.
  • Substance use disorders (SUDs) are linked to IPV, yet research on IPV screening in this population, especially veterans, is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess IPV screening and disclosure rates among veterans with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD).
  • To identify IPV subtypes and lethality risks, examining differences by sex and SUD type.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of IPV screening and disclosure data for veterans diagnosed with AUD and/or OUD in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from 2016-2021.
  • Inclusion of 790,384 veterans' electronic health records.
  • Data encompassed IPV screening rates, positive screens (IPV+), IPV subtypes, and lethality risk factors.

Main Results:

  • 22.36% of veterans were screened for IPV; 12.24% screened positive.
  • Female veterans showed higher IPV screening and disclosure rates than males.
  • Veterans with co-occurring AUD and OUD had higher positive IPV screen rates. Female veterans with co-occurring AUD/OUD reported higher lethality IPV.

Conclusions:

  • About 1 in 5 veterans in the study were screened for IPV.
  • Female veterans with co-occurring AUD and OUD exhibited the highest IPV screen positivity and severity.
  • Routine IPV screening, tailored interventions, and integrated SUD/IPV treatment are crucial in the VHA.
