Background:

Professional development is crucial for nursing's adaptation to societal and healthcare changes.
A lack of a clear, universally agreed-upon definition hinders recognition and encouragement of professional development in nursing.
Clarifying the concept of professional development is essential for nursing practice and service delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a comprehensive concept analysis of professional development specifically within the nursing context.
To establish a clear and working definition for professional development in nursing.

Main Methods:

Utilized Walker and Avant's established stages of concept analysis framework.
Conducted a systematic literature search across PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science.
Analyzed 18 selected articles to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of professional development in nursing.

Main Results:

Identified three core attributes: continuous and context-relevant activities, flexible multi-modal learning, and social/collaborative elements.
Determined antecedents including intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, organizational support, and culture.
Outlined consequences such as enhanced individual competency, career advancement, improved patient care and safety, better organizational outcomes, and financial efficiencies.

Conclusions:

This concept analysis provides a clarified definition and conceptual model for professional development in nursing.
The findings can improve understanding and communication across clinical practice, research, education, and policy.
Establishes a foundation for future research, application, and advancement of professional development in nursing.
