Phantom-based organ dosimetry in dental panoramic radiography using nanoDot OSLDs

Abstract:
The objective of this work was to determine, using panoramic radiography, on one hand how the calibration of Nanodot OSLDs is performed and, on the other hand, to indicate the level of patient irradiation using the organ dose, particularly at the level of the Mandible, Lens, and Thyroid. Indeed, the calibration was carried out using the 'free-in-air' method recommended by the OSLD supplier and the AAPM. The organ dose, on the other hand, was measured using an ATOM 701-B CIRS phantom representing an average adult and following an irradiation protocol that uses the following parameters (mA = 8, s = 14, KV = 76, FOV = 93x86). Furthermore, the dose to the lens and thyroid was measured by placing OSLD dosimeters on the surface of the phantom near the two organs. Considering the calibration factor obtained, the measured organ dose ranged from 49.29 μGy to 6607.79 μGy, with a maximum observed at the levels of the mandible. In addition, for the lens and thyroid, the results showed a difference of 90.15% and 55.48%, respectively, for the two positions, external and internal.
