This study identified stable genetic loci and candidate genes influencing wheat dough rheology using multi-locus genome-wide association studies (ML-GWAS). These findings provide a foundation for breeding superior wheat varieties with improved baking quality.
Area of Science:
- Agricultural Science
- Genetics
- Food Science
Background:
- Wheat dough rheology is crucial for baking and food quality.
- Previous genetic studies on rheological traits have limitations, necessitating identification of stable genetic loci.
- Multi-locus genome-wide association studies (ML-GWAS) are vital for understanding complex traits like dough rheology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify stable genetic loci and candidate genes associated with wheat flour dough rheological properties.
- To leverage multi-locus genome-wide association studies (ML-GWAS) for precise trait association.
- To establish a theoretical foundation for genetic improvement of wheat quality.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a 55K SNP array for genotyping 273 wheat varieties.
- Applied a multi-locus genome-wide association study (ML-GWAS) model across multi-year field trials.
- Conducted gene co-annotation, Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis, and expression profiling.
Main Results:
- Identified 239 quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) associated with dough rheological properties.
- Discovered 13 stable mono-effect QTNs and 7 pleiotropic QTNs, with 3 major-effect QTNs.
- Pinpointed 6 SNP loci and 9 key candidate genes linked to rheological traits after comprehensive analysis.
Conclusions:
- ML-GWAS successfully identified significant SNP loci and candidate genes for wheat dough rheology.
- The findings advance molecular breeding technologies for wheat improvement.
- This research provides a basis for cultivating high-quality wheat varieties with enhanced baking characteristics.
