Background And Aim:
To effectively promote breast cancer screening among women in Qatar, a thorough exploration and analysis of the factors influencing their screening behaviors is imperative. This study aims to assess the status of breast cancer screening practices among women in Qatar and examine the relationships among demographic factors.
Methods:
Through self-report surveys, an analytical cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing the Arabic version of the Breast Cancer Screening Beliefs Questionnaire among 382 women living in Qatar. The study explored attitudes toward general health check-ups, knowledge and perceptions about breast cancer, and barriers to mammographic screening practices. The participants were recruited via WhatsApp and face-to-face interactions at various hospitals.
Results:
A total of 382 participants were included in the study. Significant disparities in screening practices influenced by factors such as education level and employment status have been reported. Higher education levels were correlated with fewer perceived barriers and increased screening activities. The study also noted a critical gap between awareness of mammography and its actual utilization among the participants.
Conclusion:
Several demographic and psychosocial factors significantly influence the observed variations in breast screening behaviors among women in Qatar. The gap between the awareness of breast screening and its actual utilization pinpoints a critical area for intervention, suggesting that while women are informed, there are substantial barriers-cultural, socioeconomic, and informational-that prevent the translation of this awareness into action. The persistent low level of participation in routine breast cancer screening, despite high levels of education and awareness, calls for a multifaceted approach to address different barriers. Healthcare providers should develop culturally sensitive educational programs that cater to the diverse demographic profiles of Qatari women, emphasizing the importance of regular screening to improve early detection and treatment outcomes.
