Abstract:
Mosquito-borne diseases pose major global health challenges, yet research in the Brazilian Amazon has largely focused on Aedes and Anopheles species, overlooking Culex mosquitoes. This review synthesizes current evidence on Culex ecology, pathogen transmission, and the effects of anthropogenic deforestation on vector dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon. Using a One Health framework, we examine how land-use change, livestock expansion, and unregulated urbanization influence mosquito populations and zoonotic disease risk. We highlight significant knowledge and surveillance gaps, emphasizing the need for integrated monitoring, sustainable land management, and cross-sector collaboration to prevent emerging Culex-borne disease outbreaks in this ecologically critical region.
