Electronic Cigarette Use among American Indian Youth

Objective:
We explored electronic cigarette (e-cig) use ("vaping") among American Indian (AI) youth, a group at high risk of nicotine addiction.
Methods:
In 2014, 181 AI youth ages 11-17 were surveyed about e-cig use.
Results:
The prevalence of ever use of e-cigs among middle and high school students was 5.3% and 45.0%, respectively. In unadjusted analyses, factors associated with such use (p < .001) included being in high school, ever smoking, having a friend who smoked or vaped, endorsing e-cig use if offered by a friend, knowing someone who vapes, not perceiving e-cigs as harmful, and believing that vapers have more friends. In adjusted analysis, factors associated with ever use of e-cigs included being in high school (adjusted prevalence rate ratio (aPRR) 3.73; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.45-9.60), ever smoking (aPRR 3.2; CI 1.68-6.10), and having a close friend who vapes (aPRR 1.96; CI 1.04-3.69). Among youth who tried e-cigs, nearly one-third never smoked.
Conclusions:
Ever use of e-cigs was highly prevalent among these youth, including those who never smoked, indicating that e-cigs were readily available. Our findings suggest the need for policies that make e-cigs less attractive and available to AI youth.
