Halogens

Group 17 elements, known as halogens, are nonmetals. At room temperature, fluorine and chlorine are gases, bromine is a liquid, and iodine a solid. Astatine is a highly unstable radioactive element, so currently, most of its properties are unknown due to its short half-life. Tennessine is a synthetic element also predicted to be in this group.

Area of Science:

  • Crystallography
  • Supramolecular Chemistry

Background:

  • Tropylium salts are organic compounds with unique electronic properties.
  • Understanding the solid-state structure is crucial for predicting chemical behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the crystal structure and intermolecular interactions of a specific tropylium perchlorate salt.

Main Methods:

  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was employed.
  • Analysis of hydrogen bonding and crystal packing was performed.

Main Results:

  • The crystal structure reveals two hydrogen bonds linking the tropylium cation and perchlorate anion.
  • Perchlorate anions are coordinated by three tropylium cations.
  • Tropylium rings exhibit a parallel orientation with short centroid distances, influenced by a C2 axis.

Conclusions:

  • The observed hydrogen bonding and packing arrangement dictate the salt's solid-state properties.
  • This structural insight aids in understanding tropylium salt chemistry and potential applications.
