Effects of Antioxidant Therapy with Twendee X on Vocal Function After Phonomicrosurgery: A Randomized Controlled

Objectives:
To investigate whether perioperative antioxidant supplementation improves postoperative vocal function following phonomicrosurgery.
Study Design:
Single-center stratified randomized controlled trial METHODS: We enrolled 33 patients scheduled for phonomicrosurgery for vocal fold leukoplakia, intraepithelial carcinoma, polyps, or cysts; 22 were included in the final analysis. Patients were randomly assigned to an antioxidant group (n = 12), receiving Twendee X for 14 days before and after surgery, or to a control group (n = 10). The primary endpoint was vocal fold vibratory amplitude (VFVA) at 12 weeks postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included aerodynamic, acoustic, perceptual, and patient-reported voice measures assessed at 4 and 12 weeks.
Results:
VFVA showed significantly greater improvement in the antioxidant group than in the control group at 4 and 12 weeks postoperatively (P < 0.01). No significant between-group differences were observed in other voice parameters.
Conclusions:
Although contemporary phonomicrosurgical techniques and postoperative voice care substantially improve vocal outcomes, perioperative antioxidant supplementation may enhance postoperative preservation of vocal fold vibratory properties, suggesting a potential role in optimizing wound-healing processes.
