Background:
Neurodegenerative diseases primarily stem from the progressive functional decline and death of specific neurons within the central nervous system, ultimately leading to related functional impairments. In recent years, the pivotal role of gut microbial communities in these diseases has increasingly become a major research focus. Conducting bibliometric analysis is particularly crucial for comprehensively understanding the research context and development trends in this field.
Research Methods:
A comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection identified relevant literature published from 2005 to 2024. Bibliometric analysis of the retrieved publications was subsequently conducted utilizing a suite of specialized analytical tools: CiteSpace (v6.3.R1), Scimago Graphica (v1.0.51), and VOSviewer (v1.6.20.0).
Results:
Early research in this field primarily focused on analyzing the characteristics of alterations in gut microbiota and associated molecular immunological mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases. With deepening investigations, the mechanisms of action of microbiota in neurodegenerative diseases and their potential application value have become the current core focus. Looking ahead, targeted intervention strategies based on gut microbiota hold promise as an emerging direction for precision treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
Conclusion:
Based on data analysis, this study systematically reviews research advances in the gut microbiota and neurodegenerative diseases field over the past two decades, highlighting key discoveries in the domain. This review aims to provide valuable references for researchers in the field, thus providing a comprehensive overview of the current research landscape and highlighting emerging trajectories for future investigation.
