Abstract:
Biocatalysis is an important component of the tool-box for sustainable chemistry in general and organic synthesis in particular. In recent times, focus of applied enzymology has shifted from the reactions catalyzed by single enzymes to more ambitious applications of bio-inspired multi-enzyme assemblies, which are even more versatile biocatalysts. This review focusses on engineered bacterial compartments and biological condensates, which are two such self-assembling multi-enzyme systems. These new generation of biocatalysts promise to be a rich interface between sustainable organic synthesis and synthetic biology.
