Navigating Political Mischaracterization of DEI in the U.S. Nursing Profession
1School of Nursing, Columbia University, New York, USA.
Abstract:
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential principles in the healthcare landscape, particularly in the nursing profession, aimed at reducing systemic inequities, improving representation, and strengthening fair opportunities across nursing education, workforce development, and clinical practice. However, the current U.S. political climate has posed challenges to the value of DEI by dismissing its ethical imperatives and disavowing the evidence that equity initiatives function as intended. This commentary examines how the politically motivated opposition and mischaracterization of DEI specifically affect the U.S. nursing workforce, workplace dynamics, and patient care delivery. The article argues that a coordinated, practice-focused response grounded in nursing ethics and empirical evidence is vital to preserve equitable care standards and support the well-being of nurses from underrepresented backgrounds. While this commentary centers on the U.S. context, the tensions described mirror challenges confronting health systems globally, making the discourse broadly relevant.
