Abstract:
Medical errors due to improper training contribute to unnecessary patient morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, studies show a wide variability in the clinical skills of practicing physicians. This skill variability is likely due to the way physicians are trained through vicarious methods. Simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) is a best practice for training physicians that eliminates skill variability and ensures competency to an exceptionally high level. Additionally, SBML training has been linked to improved patient outcomes. Yet, few training programs are using SBML in endoscopy training. This article reviews studies that demonstrate SBML training enhances patient outcomes.
