Abstract:
We have developed a palladium-catalyzed method for the direct coupling of quinoline-8-carboxaldehyde with aliphatic 1°, 2° alcohols and phenols to produce quinoline-8-carboxylate. A catalytically active palladacyclic dimer intermediate has been identified by X-ray crystallography, as a key component in the process. This approach enabled the synthesis of a diverse array of quinolinyl esters in good to excellent yields, demonstrating remarkable tolerance for a wide range of functional groups.

Esters to Alcohols: Grignard Reaction
The reaction requires two equivalents of the Grignard reagent and introduces two identical alkyl groups, derived from the Grignard reagent, bonded to the hydroxyl-bearing carbon of the alcohol.
The reaction follows the typical nucleophilic acyl substitution mechanism. The Grignard...
Alkynes to Aldehydes and Ketones: Hydroboration-Oxidation
One of the convenient methods for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones is via hydration of alkynes. Hydroboration-oxidation of alkynes is an indirect hydration reaction in which an alkyne is treated with borane followed by oxidation with alkaline peroxide to form an enol that rapidly converts into an aldehyde or a ketone. Terminal alkynes form aldehydes, whereas internal alkynes give ketones as the final product.
