Background:
Navigating general practice training can be a challenging process and is characterised by unique stressors.
Objective:
Drawing on the first two authors' experiences as medical educators in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program and the medical education literature, this article outlines practical strategies for general practice registrars to thrive during (and beyond) training.
Discussion:
The authors highlight three core stressors that registrars face: discovering what you do not know; exam preparation; and preparing for independent practice. When facing each of these, registrars will benefit from drawing on the support and expertise of those around them, setting realistic expectations of themselves, and drawing on evidence-based strategies and resources. Training is also a time of exploration and opportunities for this should be seized. Supports are also available for registrars facing particularly challenging circumstances, with evidence indicating early intervention offers opportunities to excel.
