Emergent cytotoxicity and mitochondrial alterations induced by a heterobimetallic Re(I)/Au(I) complex

Abstract:
A heterobimetallic Re(I)/Au(I) complex based on a tricarbonyl rhenium(I) isonitrile polypyridyl (TRIP) scaffold was synthesized and biologically evaluated. Incorporation of the Au(I) fragment enhanced cytotoxicity in HeLa cells by >10-fold compared to the monometallic Re(I) analogue. The complex induced mitochondrial alterations, investigated in detail by electron microscopy, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy confirmed intracellular stability.
