Innovative Horizons in Dentistry: Harnessing Ozone's Therapeutic Potential against Dentin Hypersensitivity

Abstract:
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a frequent clinical problem presenting as short, sharp pain triggered by thermal, chemical, tactile, or osmotic stimuli due to exposed dentinal tubules. It adversely affects eating, drinking, and oral hygiene practices. The hydrodynamic theory remains the most accepted explanation, describing pain as a result of fluid shifts in dentinal tubules stimulating pulpal nerves. Traditional management strategies, such as desensitizing agents, dietary modification, and improved oral hygiene, often provide only temporary relief. Ozone therapy, with its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerating properties, has emerged as a potential adjunctive approach. It not only occludes dentinal tubules for immediate relief but also stimulates reparative processes, potentially offering long-term benefits. This review is based on an evaluation of published literature focusing on the role of ozone in managing DH. Various indexed articles and clinical studies were analyzed to assess treatment outcomes, patient response, and safety profiles. Notable contributions include studies by Santos et al., Lena et al., and Blaizot et al., which collectively provide evidence of reduced sensitivity levels measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Sensitivity Clinical Assessment Scale (SCASS). These findings suggest ozone therapy, when used alone or alongside conventional treatments, offers superior outcomes compared to traditional methods. Ozone therapy represents a promising adjunct in managing dentin hypersensitivity, addressing both immediate symptoms and long-term tissue health. While current evidence is encouraging, more longitudinal studies are essential to establish standardized treatment protocols and to explore patient-specific factors influencing treatment outcomes. Integration of ozone into routine clinical practice could redefine the therapeutic landscape for dentin hypersensitivity, offering durable, patient-centered solutions that enhance oral health and quality of life.
