Summary
Fourth generation human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antigen/antibody assays offer early detection but can yield false positives. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation resolved a discordant HIV test, suggesting PEG-precipitable immune interference caused the false reactivity.
