Recruitment Strategies, Challenges, and Gaps in Reaching Asian American Dementia Caregivers: A Scoping Review

ObjectivesTo address gaps from limited disaggregated data and low research participation among Asian subgroups, we explored different recruitment approaches used in studies involving Asian American dementia caregivers by Asian subgroup and study methodology, and related challenges and strategies.MethodsThis scoping review followed the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We used seven databases and reference searching for studies targeting unpaid Asian American dementia caregivers, without restriction on publication year.ResultsAmong 78 articles representing 70 studies, most used qualitative or cross-sectional designs and targeted Korean and Chinese. Community organizations and centers were the most common recruitment channels. Challenges and strategies highlighted stigma and limited cultural sensitivity toward both dementia and research participation.ConclusionsRecruiting Asian American dementia caregivers is influenced by interconnected individual and structural factors rooted in cultural influences and inclusivity gaps in research. Researchers and clinicians should strengthen trust-based community engagement, community-verified registries, and culturally responsive infrastructure.
