Are the so-called color corrector serums effective for immediate dental colorimetric changes? An in vitro study

Objective:
To evaluate the colorimetric changes of enamel, under different staining conditions, treated with color corrector serums compared to carbamide peroxide (CP).
Methods:
Bovine enamel-dentin specimens were subjected to staining with coffee (CF), black tea (BT), or artificial saliva (AS). Specimens from each staining condition (n=10/group) were subjected to serum protocols (4-min toothbrushing with a dentifrice followed by HiSmile [HS] or Rizu [RZ]), a whitening protocol (15% CP applied for 4 h daily for 14 days), or no treatment (control [CT]). Color (∆E00) and whiteness index for dentistry (∆WID) changes were evaluated immediately, 24 h, and 7 days after treatments. Additionally, product pH and enamel surface morphology were also assessed using a pH meter and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Data was tested using linear mixed models (α=5%).
Results:
RZ and HS protocols showed no significant differences from CT (p>0.05), regardless of staining and time. Coffee-stained specimens treated with RZ or HS exhibited greater ΔE00 than those in AS or BT (p≤0.001), whereas staining showed no consistent influence on ΔWID. After 24 h, CP produced significantly greater ΔE00 and ΔWID than RZ, HS, and CT, regardless of staining (p≤0.004). Only CP showed significant increases in ΔWID over time. Only RZ exhibited acidic pH, but without major changes in enamel morphology.
Conclusion:
No significant colorimetric differences were detected between the serum protocols and untreated controls, regardless of staining condition or evaluation time. After color stabilization, CP, despite its substantially greater cumulative exposure than the serum protocols, produced the greatest changes in whiteness.
Clinical Significance:
Although no significant differences in immediate color change were detected between serum protocols and CP only under coffee staining, serum protocols did not significantly differ from untreated specimens and produced no meaningful increase in whiteness. CP consistently exceeded the whiteness acceptability threshold, despite its greater cumulative treatment exposure.
