[On scientification, modernization and restoration: reflections on the development of acupuncture- moxibustion
1Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing 100700, China.
Abstract:
The current development of acupuncture-moxibustion discipline follows three approaches: the first approach focuses on integrating acupuncture-moxibustion theory with modern life science and modern clinical medicine theories, driving the integration of the science of acupuncture and moxibustion into the collaborative development framework of modern medicine (integrating into), called "scientifically advanced acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)". The second approach involves adhering to the unique theoretical system of acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM, continuously exploring and investigating the contemporary patterns and methodologies for its development, and exploring the innovative developments that align with contemporary characteristics of both the theoretic framework and diagnostic/therapeutic technology (drawing on contemporary new concepts), known as "modernized acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM". The third approach is to strive to explore the profound ideological system of ancient TCM, and attempt to restore a series of life-related theories and practices in ancient TCM, including thinking patterns, diagnostic methods, therapeutic approaches, and health preservation techniques (restoration), so as to serve contemporary medical practice, regarded as "reconstructed acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM". "Scientification" serves as a pivotal driving force for modernization, "modernization" represents the primary direction for the development of acupuncture and moxibustion of TCM, and "restoration" provides the indispensable core foundation to sustain the integrity of acupuncture and moxibustion as medical discipline. These three approaches are interdependent and inseparable. In the discipline development of acupuncture and moxibustion, only by taking all three approaches into account, can it be ensured that acupuncture and moxibustion not only retain their authentic Chinese characteristics, but also keeps pace with contemporary advancements and meets the global demand for diversified knowledge systems.
