Abstract:
Biological language models, including protein and genomic language models, are accelerating the discovery of bacterial antiviral defenses by identifying defense-associated proteins that lack detectable homology to known systems. These approaches reveal a vast, previously unexplored repertoire of defense-associated genes and suggest that antiviral defense-associated functions are more diverse and distributed across genomic contexts than previously appreciated.
