Predominantly Nonexudative Nature of Choroidal Neovascularization in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy

Background And Objective:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).
Patients And Methods:
Patients with unilateral CSCR complicated by the double-layer sign were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Cases with a neovascular network visible on optical coherence tomography angiography were selected for the analysis.
Results:
Eighty-two patients (58.7 ± 10.5 years, 39 women [47.6%]) were included. Among 34 eyes receiving no anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy (median follow-up 16.0 [IQR 9.8 to 18.8] months), CNV area changed from 0.62 (0.51 to 1.1) to 0.78 (IQR 0.50 to 1.0) mm2 (P = .2) and vascular density changed from 57.8 ± 11.6 to 55.9 ± 11.1% (P = .58). In multivariable analysis, a negative correlation was found between CNV area and central retinal thickness (P = .03). Nonexudative CNV in fellow eyes was found in 16/82 patients (19.5%).
Conclusion:
Several morphological and clinical characteristics as well as the stationary character suggest that in this specific subset of neovascular CSCR patients CNV has predominantly nonexudative nature.
