Clinical Outcomes of the First Diffractive Trifocal Intraocular Lens: A Literature Review

Purpose:
The purpose of this review article is to summarise the clinical outcomes reported in patients implanted with FineVision diffractive trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).
Methods:
We searched the PubMed (US National Library of Medicine) and Scopus (Elsevier) databases on 18 October 2025. We included any type of prospective or retrospective study published in a peer-reviewed journal reporting the clinical outcomes of patients who were implanted with the FineVision Micro F, FineVision POD/POD FT or the FineVision HP (POD F GF/POD FT 49P) IOL models after cataract or refractive lens exchange surgeries.
Results:
A total of 97 clinical studies published between 2012 and 2025 were obtained, and, of these, the three with the maximum number of eyes recruited and the longest follow-up per IOL model were included in this review. The most important data in these 9 publications was analysed, considering refractive accuracy, rotation stability, visual acuity at different distances (far, intermediate and near), defocus curves, photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity, patient-reported outcome questionnaires, ocular aberrations, light distortion, photic phenomena and adverse events.
Conclusion:
The outcomes analyzed in the present review lead us to conclude that FineVision diffractive trifocal IOLs provide good clinical performance when implanted. The most up-to-date FineVision HP model, hydrophobic with a double C-loop, provides excellent refractive accuracy, good visual performance, and patient satisfaction with high spectacle independence.
