Abstract:
People experiencing homelessness (PEH) face high rates of medical and social instability and frequently rely on emergency departments (EDs) for care. Accordingly, NYC Health + Hospitals launched the ED Engagement + Navigation program to provide specialized care management for PEH in the ED. At one hospital from March 2024 to February 2025, in which 454 patients were engaged, ED visits for PEH were reduced from an average of 11.8 in the 6 months before enrollment to 9.0 in the 6 months after enrollment (P < .01): a 24% reduction, indicating the value of specialized ED services for PEH.
