Abstract:
The Marjolin ulcer is a rare but highly aggressive malignancy arising from chronic wounds. It has been recognized clinically for more than a century, while currently there is a lack of systematic, quantitative analysis of the global research landscape. This study aims to perform a quantitative bibliometric analysis to delineate the previous academic achievement and predict possible emerging frontiers about the Marjolin ulcer. Publications served as metadata for analysis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection on February 4, 2026, using the search terms "Marjolin ulcer" and "Marjolin's ulcer." Subsequently, the bibliometrix R package was employed for statistical analysis, with the Keywords Plus function supported by the databases serving to scale the keywords analysis. Eventually, 340 publications are enrolled after screening, with the peak annual output occurring in 2025. The Copcu E is the most prolific author at the Mayo Clinic, which is the leading institution. The Journal of Burn Care & Research is the most representative journal. High-frequency keywords are "squamous-cell carcinoma," "management," "burn scar," and "gene." The research trend is shifting toward a joint investigation of clinical investigation and genetic and immunologic research. Co-citation analysis revealed 3 stable knowledge clusters. Research about Marjolin ulcer is in a formative stage, characterized by modest growth and a predominance of clinical descriptions. Compared with a simple description of clinical manifestations, future research should focus on mechanisms of malignant transformation, identify diagnostic biomarkers, and validate treatment strategies in large real-world cohorts.

Few clinical manifestations differentiate gastric ulcers from duodenal ulcers. Distinctions in the location, timing, and pain relief are crucial for healthcare providers in differentiating between gastric and duodenal ulcers during clinical assessments.
